The story of a Big Data problem in 1955 presented at StrataConf London 2012.


As soon as I have Tim Greening-Jackson's permission to share his research paper on "LEO 1 and the BR Job" I will update this blog post with information on how to get it.

There's one difference between today and 60 years ago - today we have a lot of problems that are "fairly big data". That is to say that they can resemble a big data problem but only due to lack of funding - so you can't afford enough AWS instances - and/or because you failed to chose the proper algorithm/data structure/...

In other words we have a lot of problems that we know the solution to, it's just that the solution is unaffordable for some reason. And that may well include because you are stupid and don't realize that someone else has (most of) the answer. In the 1950s there was no way to actually buy a second LEO mk 1 (or even another 1KB or memory) and a lot of the algorithms had not yet been thought of by any one.

The algorithm described in section 3.5.3 of the paper sounds an awful lot like Dijkstra's Algorithm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dijkstra's_algorithm

According to wikipedia, that was invented in 1956 and published in 1959 -- I wonder if Roger Coleman's version predated that?

Thanks for posting this, I love reading 1950s computing history. It's amazing how little has changed in many respects.

My last name is "Graham-Cumming". But here's a typical form response when I enter it: Does the web site have any idea how rude it is to claim that my last name contains invalid characters? Clearly not. What they actually meant is: our web site will not accept that hyphen in your last name. But do they say that? No, of course not. They decide to shove in my face the claim that there's something wrong with my name. There's nothing wrong with my name, just as there's nothing wrong with someone whose first name is Jean-Marie, or someone whose last name is O'Reilly. What is wrong is that way this is being handled. If the system can't cope with non-letters and spaces it needs to say that. How about the following error message: Our system is unable to process last names that contain non-letters, please replace them with spaces. The Elevator Button Problem

User interface design is hard. It's hard because people perceive apparently simple things very differently.
